Blanket Buzz
December 2004
Margaret Mumby, volunteer with the Portland Oregon chapter of Project
Linus, recently completed and donated her 1000th beautiful new quilt for children
in need of a hug. Other members of the chapter joined with Margaret at A Common
Thread in Lake Oswego to celebrate her milestone accomplishment.
In recognition of the event, members gave Ms. Mumby 1000 fat quarters, 1,000 Hershey Kisses, and 1,000 Life Savers.
Getting started with Project Linus was easy for Margaret. Several years ago chapter volunteers assembled kits of fabric in bags. Shoppers at A Common Thread were invited to take one, make the quilt, and return it to Project Linus.
Margaret, an accomplished quilter, generally makes one or two dozen quilts each month but has been known to make more than 50 in just one month. Asked how she could get so many finished and turned in, she said, "I go to bed early and get up at 1:30 am, some mornings it's 2 or 2:30 a.m., and start sewing when I get up. I get a lot done before breakfast at 7:00."
Deciding on a pattern and fabric for her next quilt project seems to be easy, "It has to speak to me, you either like it or you don't." She buys some patterns, but most are her own idea.
March 2008 UPDATE
Margaret has donated a total of 2046 quilts to Project Linus as of March 2008! She is amazing and we so appreciate her devotion to children in need of a hug through the gift of a handmade blanket. Just think of all those smiles she has put onto the faces of children receiving one of her quilts! We love you Margaret!
