Making Blankets

Blanket Making Guidelines

We welcome new handmade blankets of all styles, including quilts, single-layer fleece blankets (with tied or crocheted edges), and crocheted or knitted afghans.
  • We kindly ask that the fabric be new, washable, and odor-free.
  • Please note that smoke, chemical smells, and pet hair can cause severe allergic reactions in some children, so we cannot accept blankets with these issues.
  • For health and safety reasons, we are unable to accept used, heirloom, or thrifted blankets.
  • We cannot accept items made with wool or wool yarn.
  • Please don’t attach embellishments or buttons to your blankets.
  • It is not necessary to prewash your blanket, but if you choose to, please use a non-scented detergent and fabric softener sheets.
  • Use a 1.8 stitch length and quilt at least every 4-6 inches
  • No-sew blankets must be a single layer of Blizzard or Polar fleece.
  • Please do not fringe/tie flannel, cotton (or any other woven) as it will give off strings and fall apart quickly.
  • Please check for pins left in your item(s)!
  • Please don’t sew in personal labels.  We attach a Project Linus label to each blanket after it is inspected.
  • Be sure to safety-pin a small piece of paper with your name on it.  We like recipients to know who the special person was that made the blanket for them!
  • We all love our pets, but if you plan to donate a blanket to Project Linus please be sure to remove all pet hair.
  • If you store blankets before bringing them in, put them in an unscented plastic bag.
You don’t have to be an expert.    Our size guidelines (they are approximate):

Baby – minimum 36”x40”
Baby quilts cannot be tied.  If crocheting, please use a tight weave.

Child – minimum of 45” wide - up to 60” long

Teen – minimum of 48” wide - up to 72” long
